We're now almost a month into 2016. The debate with your family has at last reached its conclusion. Have you decided on adding a puppy to your home this year?
Puppies? Puppies! They're cute, soft, snuggly, maybe a bit loud and not potty-trained yet, but how can you resist? Like any responsible pet owner, or future pet owner, we know you've already gone down the list of pros and cons, but just to be safe, here are some important challenges and benefits to keep in mind when bringing a puppy into your home:
Always, always make sure you have the time, energy, and funds to dedicate to raising your puppy. They will not only be an addition to the family, they will play both your friend and foe, they will test your patience with curious behaviors, and also be there for you whenever you need it most. First and foremost, a dog is a living, breathing companion that deserves respect, love, and care.
A quick puppy checklist includes:
Training - Who will participate in raising your puppy? Do you have a
schedule set up, and a training system?
Veterinary Care - Do you know what vet you will use, and when to bring them in for their first shots or check-up?
Equipment - Cleaning supplies, collars, leashes, bowls, beds, etc.
House Rules - Is everyone on the same page? Where will the dog eat or sleep? Are they allowed or not allowed in certain areas of the house?
Bringing a puppy home is an exciting adventure. Stick to a plan, and don't forget to include some fun time! Shopping for toys & treats is a great way to bond with your new puppy and learn their personality. Will they like to chew on tug toys or fetch a ball? Will their favorite treat be peanut butter or cheese?
Remember, patience is key, and congratulations on becoming a new, responsible pet owner!
